An 18-year-old Northport man pleaded not guilty to malicious destruction of property in 86th District Court Friday.
Jake D. Booher, of P.O. Box 271, Northport is scheduled to appear for a pretrial nearing on May 9 at 9 a.m. He is currently free on a personal recognizance bond.
Booher and an accomplice allegedly sprayed graffiti on the outside of the Northport Public School building on March 13. A police report indicated that black spray paint was used to write obscenities and picture graphic body parts on building walls. School janitors used a chemical compound and a sandblaster to remove the paint.
Graffiti was also discovered on March 14 at an ice fishing shanty at the Northport marina, and minor damage was done to the warming hut area at the Braman Hill Recrational Area.
County Prosecutor Joseph T. Hubbell said he decided not to prosecute the alleged accomplice, who was not identified, because that person is already under the jurisdiction of the court on another matter.
If found guilty on the misdemeanor charge, Booher faces a maximum penalty of up to one year in jail and or $2,000 in fines or three times the amount of the cost of the damage done, whichever is larger.
