Kingsley edged Suttons Bay's girls' track team by 1½ points Friday to earn runner-up status in their division at the Ken Bell Invitational track meet in Traverse City.
“Most of our athletes had their best performance of the year,” Suttons Bay coach Mark Smith said.
Sophomore Angela Patterson set a personal record in the discus (97’, 1½”) for fourth in the event.
Distance dunner Breanna Korson ran the 1600 in 5:29 (personal record) for a fifth-place finish. She was also eighth in the 800 (2:32) and 3000 (12:29). Sprinter Kyra Shively ran the 100 in 14.05, and finished seventh.
Meanwhile, Alyssa Korson and Caleigh Lennerth ran the 300 hurdles in 51.92 and 53.03 for sixth and eighth places, respectively. They joined Erin Sneed and Breanna Korson in the 1600-relay for a fourth-place time of 4:35.41.
In boys’ competition, Nalen Brockman jumped 5’ 8” for fifth in the high jump and threw the discus 120’ 3”, a personal best. Ben Wynsma was second in the 1600 with a time of 4:36.87, and eighth in the 3200 at 10:33.
The Glen Lake girls’ track took 12th out of 18 teams at the Bell Invitational Friday.
Coach Paul Christiansen said Division I defending state champs East Kentwood took first with 140½ points, while Glen Lake had 23½ points. Among Division III and IV teams, the Lakers were third behind St. Francis and Frankfort.
“It’s a very competitive invitational and I thought we did pretty well against some very tough teams,” Christiansen said.
Dani Frost had the best day for the Glen Lake girls’ team. She took fourth in the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 1 inch, and seventh in the discus with a throw of 93 feet, a personal best.
Abbie Christiansen placed seventh in the long jump with a season’s best 15 feet, 4½ inches. Victoria Pecak was sixth in the 100 meter dash in 13.93 seconds, and the 800 meter relay team of Anna Brown,
Christiansen, Lauren Garver and Pecak took sixth with a time of 1.56.05. The same team took sixth in the 400 relay in 55.37 seconds.
The Glen Lake boys’ team did not place at the invitational and none of the team members finished in the top eight in any event.
The Norse host Glen Lake and several other schools in the Garland Invitational today at 4 p.m. Then they travel to Lake City for an Invitational Tournament Saturday before regional competition, May 17 at Frankfort.
