S-B golfer records first hole-in-one of year in county

The season’s first hole-in-one at a county golf course was recorded by Dennis “Bear” Dalzell of Suttons Bay at The Leelanau Club at Bahle Farms last week.

Dalzell used a 5-iron to ace the 155-yard fourth hole on Thursday, May 1. He shot a 78 for his 18-role round, and his playing partners included Jon Nissen, Drew Schaub and Ryan Hackert.

There’s still time to register for the Friendship Cup Golf Scramble, an annual fundraiser for the Friendship Community Center in Suttons Bay.

The four-player scramble will be played on Sunday, May 18, at The Leelanau Club at Bahle Farms. Preregistration is required by Monday.

The Friendship Cup will feature a shotgun start at 1 p.m., an opportunity to win the $10,000 hole-in-one prize, on-course hors d’oeuvres and beverages, a raffle, game and door prizes, and an awards ceremony. The $75 per-player entry includes 18 holes of golf, cart, food and beverage, and a chance at prizes.

Whitney Grant of Lake Leelanau, a Leland High School graduate, will receive a certificate to mark her first year on the Albion College track and field varsity team.

Under the direction of coach Hayden Smith, Albion finished third in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Grant, a freshman, competed in the javelin and had a season’s best toss of 60 feet, 11 inches at the Bluffton (Ohio) Beaver Invitational on March 29.

Grant is the daughter of Thaddeus Grand and Nancy Grant of Lake Leelanau.

Pete Edwards of Glen Arbor was recently awarded ELITE Nordic Walking Instructor certification.

Edwards is the owner and founder of The American Nordic Walking System and www.skiwalking.com and was credited with introducing thousands of Americans to Nordic Walking through his clinics.

Glen Lake softball starting pitcher Cori Kahler’s softball clinic Sunday afternoon brought in seven enthusiastic girls who received instruction from the Glen Lake softball coaches. Kahler organized the clinic for her senior project.

Laker varsity coach Gary Galla said while more participants would have been nice, the girls who showed up picked up some good tips on how to become better softball players.

Glen Lake High School graduate Marissa Treece is continuing her strong performance at the college level. The high-school cross-country and track standout took sixth place in the 5,000 meter run on May 2 at the Big East Outdoor Track & Field Championship. Running for Notre Dame as a freshman, Treece’s finish earned her team four points and helped the Irish women’s team finish third with 86 points, one point behind second-place University of Pittsburgh.
