Reports of building permit activity for the current two-week reporting period over the past two years have noted a surge in the number of permits issued around the end of April and, indeed, the numbers have surged this year as well – almost like clockwork.
The number of building permits on file and available for public perusal at the Leelanau County Construction Code Authority office at the Government Center in Suttons Bay Township jumped from 68 to 108 during the last two weeks of April. The 40 new permits most recently added to the file represent a combined estimated value of $1,537,700, bringing the year-to-date value estimate to $7,517,530.
The number of permits issued so far this year is up more than five percent from 2007, while the estimated values are up more than six percent from last year. Nonetheless, the numbers are still substantially lower than those posted in 2006 and 2005. Between 2005 and 2007, the number of permits issued dipped 32 percent, while values fell 41 percent.
