A special $5 showing of the new movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull at the Bay Theater in Suttons Bay next Thursday, May 22, at 6 p.m. will benefit two Odyssey of the Mind (OM) teams from Leland Public School that are heading to the University of Maryland at the end of the month for the OM World Finals.
Meanwhile, tonight, May 15, the two teams will host a fundraising dinner at the Steak Haus restaurant at the King’s Challenge Golf Course in Cleveland Township from 5 to 8 p.m. The third through sixth grade students have been selling tickets to that event for several weeks.
The $5 tickets now on sale for next week’s premiere of the new movie starring Harrision Ford will help the students raise funds based on an OM “problem.” One of the tasks of the two OM teams has been to design and construct structures made out of balsa wood that support as much weight as possible. The “solutions” created by the two Leland teams have allowed them to advance through regional and state competition.
The structures have held as much as much as 771 pounds before collapsing, while the structures themselves weigh about as much as three nickels. Those attending the movie premiere will be asked to bring coins, paper money or checks that will be weighed, with the goal of achieving 771 pounds. Those coming close to guessing the correct weight of the money will receive prizes. All of the money collected will help defray the cost of the team’s upcoming visit to Maryland.
Tickets to the movie will be offered in advance for $5 through the Leland Public School office, or for $6.50 at the door. For more information, phone (231) 432-0011.
