Two Leelanau Township women will present a program on folk art and its impact on the region's history at the May 22 meeting of the Northport Area Heritage Association.
Sharon McMachen Kalchik and Phyllis Kilcherman will each present examples of either their own work or those of other artists who represent different styles of folk art that have been present in the Leelanau Township community. Kalchik will have 30 folk art paintings she has created on display and will discuss a selection of the works. Her art project began as a way to recapture local scenes as she remembered them to share with her grandchildren.
Kilcherman will have on display and discuss various types of folk art painting that were brought by the early families that settled in the area. The styles and types of folk art represent different nationalities, such as the Scandinavian countries, Germany, the Netherlands and England.
The Northport Area Heritage Association’s meeting starts at 7 p.m. and will be held at the Northport Trinity Church UCC, 103 N. Warren St., Northport.
