"It's been a good month," said St. Mary baseball coach Steve Plamondon while adding up the wins.
They totaled 11 in a row, with the Eagles’ last loss during a split with Mesick on April 30.
The Eagles picked up four wins Saturday alone — with four pitchers picking up their first varsity victories —and have wrapped up the Cherryland Conference title with an 8-0 record.
It’s been a good week, too.
The Eagles set back Suttons Bay twice last Thursday, 8-1 and 5-2.
Credit pitcher Ray Platts with allowing only two hits while striking out 5 in the opener. Norseman Jesus Olivio singled, and was driven home by a Marty Glowicki double.
Kienan Sutton singled, doubled and drove in 2 runs for the Eagles, while David Pasch and Jacob Plamondon each singled twice and scored runs.
Adam Peplinski picked up the win in the nightcap, scattering 6 hits. Matt Pasch singled twice and drove in two runs, while Sutton singled, doubled and drove in a run. For Suttons Bay, Ryan Manning went 2-for-3.
The wins helped offset the Eagles’ earlier 6-3 loss to Suttons Bay in the final of the Leelanau Classic tournament.
Saturday the Eagles secured four wins in games cut short by the mercy rule.
St. Mary set back host Traverse City Christian, 18-1 and 15-0, then stayed on the Christian field to beat Leelanau School 21-0 and 28-8.
Picking up their first wins were freshman Layton Korson, sophomores Michael Pendergast and David Pasch, and senior Chase Bonhag in his first start. Korson, Pendergast and Pasch tossed one-hitters.
In the first Christian game, Matt Pasch singled, doubled and tripled with 2 RBI; Pendergast singled, doubled and drove in 3 runs, and Jacob Plamondon singled, doubled and knocked in a run.
Adam Furore knocked in 4 runs in the nightcap with a single and a double, Platts singled and tripled and Bonhag picked up a pair of singles.
In the opener against Leelanau School, Eagle Matt Pasch tripled twice, doubled and singled to knock in 3 runs. David Pasch doubled and scored 3 runs; Plamondon singled twice while scoring 3 runs.
St. Mary pounded out 20 hits in the nightcap, with David O’Connor collecting 3 singles and scoring 3 runs. Mitchell Herman singled and doubled and Layton Korson singled twice; each scored 3 times and knocked in 2 runs. Ryan Korson singled twice, doubled, and scored 4 runs with 2 RBI; Ryan Couturier singled twice.
Leelanau School closed the gaps in rematches Tuesday, but still fell 8-0 and 9-5 to St. Mary. Platts threw a no-hitter in the opener over 6 innings while striking out 12. Collecting two hits each were Ryan Korson, David O’Connor and Matt Pasch.
Adam Peplinski got the win in the nightcap, striking out 6 over 4 2/3 innings. Platts singled and doubled, while Ryan Korson singled twice.
For the Thunderbirds, Pat Morgan collected three singles and scored; Ben Rode singled twice and scored 2 runs; and Zack Stanz singled twice and knocked in 2 runs.
St. Mary will play at the 6-team Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart Tournament Saturday, and is scheduled to host Kingsley next Wednesday, May 21.
Drawings for the 6-team Division IV District tournament hosted by Traverse City St. Francis are scheduled for Friday. Two “pre-district” games are set for Tuesday, May 27, with the remaining four teams matching up Saturday, May 31.
