It was a tough day for county softball teams either hosting or participating in tournaments on Saturday.
Glen Lake hosted the first Laker Invitational of the season Saturday, which included two-time Division 4 defending state champions Allen Park Cabrini, Division 2 power Cadillac, and East Jordan. Glen Lake lost to Cadillac, 11-0, in first game of the day, and 16-6 to East Jordan in the consolation game.
Coach Gary Galla said every game in the tournament was a “mercy.”
“We had an awful day Saturday, everybody had an off day for us. Hopefully, we got it out of our system,” he said.
Against Cadillac, Hannah Therrien and Lauren O’Brien had the Lakers’ only hits of the game.
In the consolation game, Coach Galla said senior pitcher Cori Kahler tossed a pretty good game, but errors doomed the Lakers. “We had 13 errors that led to 16 unearned runs,” he said.
Kristen Pleva had 2 hits, 2 RBI; Amanda Launter and Kaelyn Thayer each had 2 hits; and Haley Sobczak had 2 RBI for the Lakers.
Cori Kahler and Kristen Pleva were named to the all-tournament team.
Leland fared no better at the Bellaire Invitational Saturday, losing 18-1 to Bellaire and 18-0
to Frankfort in the consolation game.
Coach Joe Nedow said it was a matter of having too many things go wrong at the same time. Starting pitcher Dena Popp spent part of Friday at the hospital with a possible case of appendicitis, and two other players had bad colds after going on the Leland school physics trip to Chicago.
“But, all three showed up to play Saturday, even though a couple of them looked like death warmed over,” he said.
The Comets lone score came in the first inning. Haley VerSnyder hit a double, then scored on a ground out. “That was pretty much it for us right there,” Nedow said. The Eagles responded with a 12-run onslaught in the first inning, then picked up six more over the third and fourth innings.
Against Frankfort Leland, was held hitless and couldn’t overcome the Panthers’ bunt and steal strategy. “We couldn’t stop them,” Coach Nedow said.
Glen Lake will host its second and final tournament of the season on Saturday. The Lakers will take on Clare at 9 a.m., with Rogers City and Pine River squaring off at 11:15 a.m. The consolation game starts around 1:30 p.m., with the championship game slated to start at 3:45 p.m.
