Lakers drop tourney games; Comets split pair

Glen Lake didn't play as though it was in a free-fall in losing a pair of games at the John Schlosser Memorial Tournament.

And Leland, another county baseball team that has struggled, picked up a win Saturday at the Bellaire Invitational.

The Lakers put in a very respectable performance in their opening game, a 6-5 loss to Onekama. Host Glen Lake then fell to St. Francis, 9-2, in the consolation game in dropping its ninth straight game. St. Francis was upset by Manistee Catholic Central, 11-8, in the second opening round matchup.

Glen Lake is 9-11 overall.

“It was two teams playing some good baseball,” said Glen Lake coach Kris Herman of the first game. “We had one error and they had two.”

Onekama struck for 5 runs in the second inning before the Lakers came back with 3 in the third and 2 in the fourth. Devin Weber’s RBI single tied the game.

Onekama scored the game winner in the fifth, and its centerfielder preserved the win with a lay-out catch of a line shot from the bat of KC Novak with 2 outs and a runner on second in the sixth.

“It was a good shot; the centerfielder had to make a good play,” said Herman.

Contributing RBI singles were Nick Schwartz, Sean Griffard and Weber. Novak’s double also
drove in a run.

St. Francis’ pitching ace Dan Brick shut down Glen Lake in the second game, allowing only a lead-off double by Weber and RBI singles from Griffard and Josh Jacklin. Four untimely Laker errors didn’t help, Herman said.

Glen Lake also dropped a pair of non-league games last Thursday to Elk Rapids, 12-3 and 5-3. Jacklin and Michael Salamino each swatted a pair of singles in the opener. Novak, Jacklin and Andy Scarbrough each had 2 hits in the second game. Joe Galla scattered 7 hits over 6 innings, but was still saddled with the loss.

Alex Gulow’s offense helped him to a save in Leland’s 4-3 win at Bellaire Saturday, although the Comets were pounded in the nightcap by tourney winner and Northwest Conference foe Frankfort, 24-2. Leland fell to 6-12, while the Panthers improved to 15-3 overall. The game did not count toward conference standings.

Against Bellaire, Phil Matro’s 2-run double tied the score at 2-2 in the third inning. The Eagles made a mistake in issuing an intentional walk in the fifth to pitch to Jason Schlueter, who responded for a run-scoring single for the lead.

Bellaire knotted to score again in the sixth. But in the extra seventh inning, Matt Rinehart singled and stole second, with Gulow’s single driving him home for the win, according to coach Scott Stoerck.

Winning pitcher Dylan Schaub did not issue a walk while scattering 8 hits through 6 innings. Gulow held Bellaire scoreless in the bottom of the seventh for the save.

Frankfort jumped to a 12-0 lead in the title game before Stoerck emptied his bench. Tita Leon provided a RBI single for the Comets.
