Norse top G-L again

Leelanau County's two girls' varsity soccer teams went head-to-head for a second time last Wednesday - and the results were similar to the first time.

JORDAN LEWIS of Glen Lake dribbles
upfield in the Lakers' match against
Manistee Tuesday. Lewis scored her
first goal of the year in Glen Lake's
2-0 victory.

Suttons Bay beat Glen Lake 8-1.

Despite the score, however, the Lakers played better against the Norsemen than they did the first time around, according to Glen Lake coach Dorne Yeager.

“We played pretty well for us but not fast enough or accurate enough to give them (Suttons Bay) much trouble,” Yeager said.

The Lakers’ single goal was scored by sophomore Cassie Lee “with a beautiful direct free kick just outside the penalty box that sailed over the Suttons Bay wall and high into the goal,” according to Yeager.

Goal scoring for the Norsemen was led by junior Michelle Ness with a pair. Also scoring for Suttons Bay were senior Alyssa Korson, junior Chelsea Moyer, freshman Kali Moyer, junior Emily Seeley, sophomore Brandey Albarado, and freshman Emily Stowe.

“The girls have been doing a good job playing team defense. They are still working hard, and I am hoping they can get some momentum going now through the rest of the regular
season,” Norsemen coach Ryan DeFour said following the game against Glen Lake.

DeFour got his wish later that week when the team visited Manistee and won, 5-1. That brought Suttons Bay’s record for the season to 8-2-2.

Korson again stepped up, producing three of the five goals against Manistee. Moyer added two.

“Manistee came out and played pretty hard from the beginning,” DeFour said.

Manistee’s only goal came early in the first half; but by halftime the Norsemen were up, 3-1.

It was a hard, ugly game, though, DeFour said. “It was cold outside, and there were a lot of fouls on both sides,” he said.

Things didn’t go any better for Manistee on Monday at Glen Lake. The Lakers beat Manistee Tuesday, 2-0.

But the Lakers were on a roll. On Friday, the team traveled to Kalkaska and beat the Blue Blazers, 2-0.

That game was “pretty rough and not pretty to watch,” according to Yeager. Despite the win, the team seemed to be “a little off,” Yeager said. “We had some good play, but we are capable of better.”

And the Lakers got “better” when they hosted Manistee.

“After the ugly win at Kalkaska, our play was much better,” Yeager said. “We did not score a lot but our passing was good.”

Sophomore Jordan Lewis scored her first goal of the season on a penalty kick nine minutes into the first half. She also had an assist on the score by senior Emma Cook midway through the second half.

Laker senior goal keeper Gina Gauthier “earned the shutout,” the coach noted.

The Lakers’ season record is now 9-4. Yesterday, they were headed to play Forest Area.
On Friday, the Lakers will host Traverse City Central; and will travel to Benzie Central on Tuesday.

The Norsemen on Wednesday were traveling to Harbor Springs. On Friday, they will host Marquette; and on Monday will head to Gaylord.
