A win in a triangular meet and a second-place finish in a 6-team invitational has vaulted the St. Mary golf team three spots in the state rankings.
St. Mary is now rated sixth in Division 4, according to the Michigan Intercollegiate Golf Coaches Association. Last week, the Eagles were ranked ninth.
On Monday, Bradford Schaub earned medalist honors with a 4-over 76 to lead St. Mary to a second-place finish in the Benzie Central Invitational at Champion Hills Golf Course. Adam Peplinski added a 79, Michael Pendergast shot 81 and Tyler Shaffran had a 89 for Eagles for a team score of 325. Charelvoix won the invitational with a 317.
Glen Lake finished third at 336 behind the play of Matt O’Brien (79), Steve King (82), Matt Abramson (84) and Austin Novak (91).
St. Mary defeated Traverse City Central’s “C” team and The Leelanau School last Wednesday, May 7, at Leland Country Club. Pacing the Eagles were Schaub (38), Pendergast (40), Peplinski (47), and Tyler Shaffran and Phil Matro (48 each).
Low players for Leelanau School were Andrew Campbell (41) and Justin Lenoch (46).
St. Mary also competed at the St. Francis Tournament on Saturday at the Grand Traverse Resort’s Wolverine course and had a team total of 367 in the 22-school field. Peplinski (86), Pendergast (87), Schaub (89) and Shaffran paced the Eagles. The Eagles also finished in fifth place at the Traverse City Invitational Friday.
St. Mary will play Friday at Sugar Loaf The Old Course in a 4-team meet hosted by Glen Lake and Monday in a match hosted by Leelanau School. On Thursday, the Eagles return to the Wolverine for District play.
