Fiesta marks Cinco de Mayo

Glen Lake students in grades K-6 celebrated Cinco de Mayo last week with a fiesta.

FIFTH GRADER Andrew Lindeman was
part of a mariachi band staged as part of
Glen Lake's Cinco de Mayo celebration last
week.

During the event, organized by teacher Ellen Piña, the students sang a selection of music appropriate to their part of the Spanish curriculum, which is new to grade school students this year. Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for “5th of May”) is observed in many locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.

After their musical presentations, they shared their new Spanish language skills with friends and families as they played games and shopped in the mercado (market). Families are also able to tour a pueblo (village) students have created from shoeboxes, and well as the galleria de arte (art gallery) in hallways.

Funds for the new Spanish program have come from the Glen Lake Community Education Foundation through support generated at the annual Glen Lake Gala held in November.
