Northport Public School students spent part of Friday and Saturday setting up 42 decorated doors for public display on the waterfront that culminates a nine-month project.

Some of the 42 doors that were converted into
pieces of art by students and community members
are viewed last weekend along the waterfront in
Northport's Haserot Park.
The Northport Community Door Walk Project exhibit officially opened Sunday at 1 p.m. in Haserot Park. Thirty-three students in Northport art teacher Jenny Evans' classes, as well as nine community members, painted a wide range of scenes and images on the old or unused doors and are sharing their creations with the public.
Evans, in a press release, called the door project stabiles, an art form pioneered by Alexander Calder and an environmental sculpture that is dedicated to family and community.
“The project is intended to provide Northport students, and also the community, an opportunity to celebrate where we live,” she said, adding “there are 42 points of view expressed.”
The doors were donated or purchased from several businesses, especially Odom Builders in Traverse City and Mark Voight Builders of Northport, with financial support from the Northport Lions Club, Northport-Omena Chamber of Commerce, Northport Trinity Church and community members Nina Collins and teacher Steve Wetherbee.
The doors, which were installed in brackets and planted in a “meandering arc” in Haseort Park, will remain on display through Labor Day.
