Leelanau Sports Briefs - Litton excels in Bayshore Marathon

Kip Litton of Suttons Bay, 46, was the first area finisher in the men's masters division at the Bayshore Marathon in Traverse City Saturday. Litton was clocked in 2:55.10 despite the fact that he recently underwent knee surgery. Litton trailed only masters division winner Larry Guiterrez of Fenton (2:53.40). A total of 119 men raced in the master's division.

Litton is a member of the Snickers Marathon Team, which consists of 200 runners, bikers and triathletes nationwide. He earned the invitation to join the team after becoming the first Michigan runner over the age of 45 to finish the 2007 Boston Marathon.

The Bayshore event, which also included a half-marathon and 5K race, attracted several thousand runners.

The Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness said 300 runners will be selected from a lottery drawing to run in the event, and hopes to have each of Michigan’s 83 counties represented. To be eligible, participants must be at least 18, be able to complete a 5-mile run, and have competed in at least one running event endorsed by the Governor’s Council prior to June 30. Glen Lake seniors Abbie Christiansen and Aaron King were given the 2008 Loren Richardson award at the May 22 senior awards ceremony.

Named for Loren Richardson, an outstanding Laker athlete who died in an automobile accident in 1964, the award is given to a senior male and female based on their attitude (on and off the court or field), participation, and accomplishments in their sports as decided by their high school coaches.

Christiansen was the only senior girl to participate in three sports (track, golf and basketball). King played basketball and soccer.
