County athletes represented Leelanau well at the Honor Roll Track Meet Tuesday in Traverse City.
Ben Wynsma of Suttons Bay had the best individual effort among county athletes by finishing second in the 3200 (10.16:87). The Norsemen boys’ 400-meter relay team took home a fourth (46.47) and the 3200-meter relay team was fifth (8:50.27).
Senior Nalen Brockman had the only medal in field events for the Suttons Bay boys, finishing third in high jump (6’4”).
The Norse girls also had one team member place in field events, as Angela Patterson was third in discus (100’3”).
In relays, the girls’ team was fifth in the 3200 and 1600. Meanwhile, Breanna Korson placed third in the 3200-meter run (12.05:35) and Caleigh Lennerth was fifth in the 300 hurdles (51.2).
Glen Lake’s Lauren Garver placed fourth and sixth in the 100 and 200 meter, respectively, with times of 13.17 and 28.53. She and teammates Abbie Christiansen, Melissa Schopieray and Victoria Pecak were fourth in the 800-meter relay in 1:54.77. Christiansen, Pecak, Garver and Anna Brown, the Lakers’ 400-meter team, compiled a time of 54.65 for sixth place.
Amber Therrien had season bests in both of her distance events— the 800 and 1600-meter runs—
with times of 2:32.74 and 5:32.44, placing seventh and fifth, respectively. Junior Nadine Gilmer had a time of 5:51.63 for a ninth-place finish in the 1600.
In field events, Christiansen was sixth in long jump with an effort of 14’8”. Brown cleared the pole vault bar at 8 feet, finishing seventth. And sophomore Dani Frost was third in shot put (34’7”) and seventh in discus (93’).
John Lee was the only male Laker to place at the meet. He posted a season-record long jump of 18’1/4”.
“It was the first time he got past 18 feet,” coach Paul Christiansen said.
At a 9th and 10th grade meet May 22 at Buckley, Suttons Bay freshmen and sophomores were winners in several events.
First-place ribbons went to Jesse Bunker, 110 hurdles (19.05); Josh Ackerman, pole vault (10’); Taylor Jolliffe, high jump (4’6”); Molly Stachnik, pole vault, 6’6”); and Melissa Laredo, discus (72’3”).
