Catch a Rising Star is compiled by news editor Amy Hubbell and is published twice a month when school is in session.
Octavia Buss, daughter of Dea Bona and Wes Buss, has been selected to represent Northport as a “Rising Star” this week.
Known as “Tavi” by the school community, Buss was recognized for by the staff of Northport Public School who said her “infectious smile and generous nature” will be missed when she graduates from Northport to attend Michigan State University this fall.
During her high school career, Buss emerged as a leader on both the girls varsity and basketball teams and has also played soccer.
“Although I love playing sports because I love the games, my favorite part of sports is growing as a team,” she said. “The friendships I have made over the years mean so much to me.”
She has also been a member of the National Honor Society, Youth Advisory Council and completed her senior project on the importance of early detection in fighting breast cancer.
She has a younger brother, Quenton, who is a junior at Northport.
Hometown: Leelanau Township.
Interests: Reading, writing, basketball, volleyball and soccer.
Favorite Class: English. “I love writing and reading. I plan to pursue a career as an editor.”
Do you have a role model? “I’d have to say my mom. She’s worked very hard and taught me that whatever I want to do, I can. I just have to work at it.”
Favorite place to hang out: “Any one of my friends’ house.”
Describe your perfect day: “In the summer, hanging out at the beach with friends and having a good time. Most of the time it’s in Northport and the marina and walking around town.”
What’s the best book you’ve ever read: “Harry Potter, definitely. I’m one of those people who pre-orders the books and goes to the midnight openings of the
movies. I’ve read each book at least six times.”
Favorite musical group: “I don’t have a favorite. I listen to a lot of different music. I don’t like to limit myself.”
