Seven county students concluded their track season Saturday by participating in the state track finals, with five athletes finishing as high as 12th in competition.
Both Glen Lake sophomore Dani Frost, and the Laker 400 relay team, finished 12th in their respective events. Frost threw the shot put 32’7”, while relay teammates Anna Brown, Abbie Christiansen, Victoria Pecak and Lauren Garver completed the 400-meter course in 53.93.
Sophomore Ben Wynsma of Suttons Bay ran a 4:32 in the 1600 to finish 13th. Senior Breanna Korson of Suttons Bay completed her high school career in track by running a 2:28 in the 800, also good enough for 13th.
“It was a windy day at the state meet which made it hard for the athletes to set personal best times,” coach Mark Smith said.
The schools will lose five seasoned female athletes to graduation. But the future remains bright for Smith and his Glen Lake counterpart Paul Christiansen with the success of 10th graders Wynsma and Frost.
“Breanna is leaving here as part of the school record 3200-meter relay team; tied for No. 5 in Suttons Bay’s all-time list in the pole vault (6’6”); No. 3 in the 800 (2:24.85); No. 3 in the 1600 (5:21.8) and No. 3 in the 3200 (11:53.0). And was part of the No. 8 all-time
1600-meter relay team,” Smith said.
Three members of the Laker relay team are 4-year athletes with multiple trips to the state finals. Both Pecak and Abbie Christiansen have been to the state finals each year of their high school careers. Distance runner Amber Therrien has qualified three times, while Brown earned two trips. Trish Lootens has balanced the team in field events and Mike Keim has been a Laker distance runner for two of his 4-year career at Glen Lake.
“These kids have really been the backbone of the team. They’ll be hard to replace,” Christiansen said. “They’ve worked hard to achieve at different levels of competition. I’m lucky to have been able to be around a great bunch of gals and boys every day. I’ve enjoyed seeing them mature as individuals and athletes.”
