District loss ends Glen Lake's season at 10-7

Glen Lake saw its season come to an end in a 2-1 loss to Big Rapids Crossroads Academy in district play at Pentwater last Thursday, May 29.

The loss left the Lakers with a final record of 10-7.

Coach Dorne Yeager reported that Big Rapids scored 11 minutes into the first half, but the Lakers kept it close with good defense and outstanding play from senior goalkeeper Gina Guathier, who had 14 saves in the game.

Midway through the second half, sophomore midfielder Cassie Lee scored with an assist from sophomore forward Jordan Lewis to even the game. With just over two minutes remaining, however, Big Rapids scored on a game-winning penalty kick.

“We played well,” Yeager said. “Big Rapids had more speed but we passed fairly well despite pressure; and Gina (Gauthier) did a great job in goal for us. We get a little better every year,” the coach added.

This year, the Lakers will lose six seniors to graduation. Seniors Emma Cook, Emily Hubbell, Hannah Hillier and Skye Hillier earned individual all-academic award honors.

“The addition of assistant coach Meaghan Murphy also helped a great deal this year,” Yeager said.
