Completion of downtown paving expected by July 4

The repaving of village and state streets in downtown Northport is expected to be completed before the July 4 holiday period.

Paving work on other streets being done as part of the Northport-Leelanau sewer project will continue through at least the end of July, however.

A CREW from Elmer's works on the street-
paving project in Northport last week.

Northport Village administrator Greg King said Monday the contractor doing the paving work, Elmer’s Asphalt, is a little behind schedule due to poor paving conditions in May.

“The (cool) weather just killed us in May and it killed Elmer’s, put them way behind on all their other projects,” King said.

The paving schedule in Northport is Tuesdays-Thursdays through June and July, according to King. “That is when they will be here, weather permitting,” he said.

The paving, part of the overall $15 million joint sewer system project, is slightly behind its original schedule. King said the original plan was to have streets completed by mid July.

Before the July 4 holiday weekend, King said downtown area streets and M-201 through the village should be completely resurfaced. “The streets on the periphery will be completed later,” he said.

Few village residents and business owners were happy with the condition in which some village streets were left last fall. But with spring quickly turning to summer and the paving crews working hard, Northport-Omena Chamber of Commerce president Matt Davis said the complaints have mostly disappeared.

“I think we were all a little taken aback when half of Main Street was left unpaved through the winter. But, now we’re very happy with the progress we are seeing,” he said.
