Farmer market to Northport debut June 27

The Northport community is starting its own farmers market and is looking for vendors.

George Anderson, along with Dorothy Schoebel and Ann McInnis, formed a committee to gauge interest in bringing a farmers market in the village last year. The first Northport Farmers Market will be held Friday, June 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the lawn in front of the Depot next to the marina.

Anderson said community members have been talking about hosting a farmers market in Northport for at least the last two years. Anderson approached the Michigan State University Extension Office’s Leelanau Farmers Market program to see if a Northport market could be organized. Reuben Chapman, head of the farmers market program, said the program’s officials talked with Anderson last year and while they support a Northport effort, they would have difficulty in getting vendors interested in going to a fifth market.

“We have four viable markets going already and a lot of our vendors are pretty full up,” he said. Chapman said Northport is a very attractive community and has an active farming network. “There are a lot of fruit growers up there. A farmers market there will be very interesting,” he said.

Anderson sent out letters to 10 farmers he thought would be interested in setting up a display at the Northport market. “We made some phone calls and discovered more people interested. The Leelanau Farmers Market people are also spreading the word throughout the county,” he said.

With the word out already, Anderson said he, Schoebel, McInnis and the Northport community are optimistic about the attracting a nice variety of vendors. “It is my hope it (the market) will be another positive move toward regenerating Northport,” he said.

The area around the Depot has plenty of room for vendor booths, according to Anderson. The cost for a one-time display is $10, or a vendor may purchase a seasonal fee of $90.

The market will be held each Friday morning, rain or shine, through Sept. 5. To sign up for a display area call (231) 386-5188.
