Natural Resources specialists from the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians have been netting fish on inland lakes within the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore as part of a study authorized by the National Park Service.

School boards in Leelanau County’s four public school districts will have five new members following Monday’s election. The closest race was for a one-year term on the Glen Lake school board, with Glen Arbor attorney Jack Beam coming out ahead with 502 votes.

A 61-year old Suttons Bay man was severely burned Monday when his experimental aircraft crashed while attempting to land at Woolsey Memorial Airport north of Northport.

The county Board of Commissioners Ways and Means committee met with Benzie County Sheriff Vance Bates and jail administrator Jeff Conquest Tuesday to discuss proposed revisions in a contract to house Leelanau County inmates in the Benzie facility.

The Glen Lake softball team paused briefly to celebrate its Division IV Regional 26 championship Saturday in Mesick. The Lady Lakers, now 30-12 and counting, shelled Hillman 10-1 in the East Jordan quarterfinals on Tuesday. They face Mason County Eastern (26-4) in a semifinal game tomorrow at Bailey Park in Battle Creek.

Leelanau County “probably will go along” with the Leelanau County Citizens for Reasonable Taxation in a lawsuit against the State Tax Commission “if other counties” in northwestern Michigan also will.

Leelanau County’s Board of Commissioners voted 3-2 Tuesday not to give its approval to plans by the County Commission on Aging to seek a second bus from the state to transport senior and handicapped citizens.

Construction of “The Millside” shop and coffee complex at Suttons Bay moves ahead. To enclose some 10,000 square feet of space, the new building is adjacent to offices of its builder Gary Beuerle, at Northern Lumber Co. and will have a sweeping view of the village marina and Suttons Bay.

Myron G. Becker, superintendent of schools at Northport for the past three years, has resigned. Kenneth Lautzenheiser of Mesick has been named to succeed him.

The Michigan Bell Telephone Company has asked for a general rate increase throughout its territory which would boost charges for residential service from one to three cents a day in Lake Leelanau, Leland and parts of Elmwood and Bingham and an average of nearly two cents a day in Northport.

Officers were elected Thursday night at the first organization of the Glen Arbor Township Fire Department headed by Chief Frank Basch, who was appointed earlier.
