A new program designed to help elementary age children practice their reading skills is being introduced at the Suttons Bay-Bingham District Library.
The program involves a specially-trained therapy dog, who acts a non-judgmental listener.
Oliver, a beagle owned by Judy and John Krug of Suttons Bay, is certified through Therapy Dogs International, which requires a series of rigorous tests of overall temperament and suitability for the work.
“The activity is for young students in our area’s public and private schools and those children who are home schooled,” Judy Krug said. “It gives them a chance to practice their reading skills and improve upon them during the summer months.”
Library director Virginia Roberts is working with the Krugs to determine the level of interest in the service, which will be offered free of charge. Depending on interest, half-hour sessions will be scheduled at convenient times during the summer.
Families interested in learning more by call Krug at 271-5719.
