1922-2008
Services were held June 12 in Peshawbestown for Albert Francis Chippewa of Peshawbestown who died June 9 at Tendercare Health Center of Leelanau. He was 85.
He was born in Peshawbestown on Sept. 30, 1922, the son of Daniel and Eliza (Raphael) Chippewa.
As a young man he served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, the Grand Traverse Band elders program, and Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church. He was also active in exercising treaty fishing rights, and was employed by the Leelanau Sands Casino.
He is survived by a brother, Venward Chippewa, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by six brothers, Russell, Gordon, Ernest, Phillip, Wayne and Daniel; and five sisters, Evelyn Felice, Mabel May, Louise LaCroix, Violet Harter and Irene Jackson.
