The Suttons Bay Township Board may hold a special meeting sometime within the next two weeks to finalize actions it wasn't able to complete at its regular monthly meeting last week.
A request from a local boxing club for "2-percent" casino revenue funding from the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, as well as the appointment of a local attorney to fill a vacancy on the Suttons Bay-Bingham Fire and Rescue Authority board, will likely be addressed at the special meeting.
At last week’s meeting, the board voted unanimously to endorse a request for tribal 2-percent funds from the Leelanau Christian Neighbors. The group is seeking $10,000 from the tribe for a Neighborhood Assistance Program that helps pay utility bills for needy local residents.
Township supervisor Rich Bahle said that a representative from the Suttons Bay-based Leelanau Boxing Club had expressed an interest in applying for an unspecified amount of 2-percent funding, but a written application had not been presented. Bahle said that once a formal application was submitted, the board could hold a special meeting to consider endorsing it. The deadline to apply for the tribal funding is the end of June.
At last week’s meeting, Bahle nominated Suttons Bay attorney Dan Penning to replace township treasurer Cathy Herman as a township representative on the Fire and Rescue Authority board. Other township board members balked at approving the nomination, however, pending the receipt of more information.
Township clerk Sandra VanHuystee said Penning was neither a registered voter nor a property owner in Suttons Bay Township. Bahle noted, however, that Penning is a resident of the township and operates a business here, having taken over the legal practice of the late Stu Hollander.
Trustee Ron Send said he wanted to ensure that Penning is at least a registered voter in the township before appointing him as a township representative on the Fire and Rescue Authority board. Bahle said he would ensure that Penning’s status as a township resident was verified before calling a special meeting to decide on Penning’s appointment.
In other business at last week’s meeting, the Suttons Bay Township Board:
• Learned that Rotary Charities had awarded the township’s Parks and Recreation Committee $25,000 to be used as a “challenge grant” for matching funds being sought to help pay for the acquisition and development of 126 acres at Center and Herman roads for use as a township park.
• Learned that a committee of township and village officials will conduct additional interviews for a professional planner to replace Rochelle Rollenhagen, who resigned earlier this year. Suttons Bay Township provides zoning and planning services for the Village of Suttons Bay and Bingham Township under a contract that is being redrafted.
• Renewed an updated Hazardous Materials Response contract with the Traverse City Fire Department. The annual cost of the contract increased from $300 to $395. Townships throughout Leelanau County have such contracts with Traverse City because local fire departments do not have the specialized equipment or training required for hazardous materials response.
• Authorized Bahle to expend no more than $3,500 for new monuments marking burial plots throughout the Suttons Bay Township cemetery.
• Approved a $27,623 agreement with the Leelanau County Road Commission to make improvements to a stretch of Stony Point Rd. this summer.
