New keyless school lock system touted

An update on summer projects under way at Leland School was given to the district Board of Education during its rescheduled monthly meeting this week.

Superintendent Mike Hartigan told the board Monday night about several projects that are being funded this summer through a sinking fund, established last year with voter support. The efforts total an estimated $80,000,

The most far-reaching project is installation of a new keyless lock system for the school.

“It will allow us to control the doors with a computerized system,” Hartigan said.

From a central location, administrators will be able to establish a set schedule to open and lock the doors and completely eliminate the need for keys. Those who use the building on a regular basis will be issued non-duplicate cards, which will allow them access.

“The system records which cards we used to access the building and when,” he said. “Rather than worry about keys getting into the hands of someone who's not authorized, we can just deactivate the card. It will allow us more control over the facility and allow us to lock all the doors of the facility at once, if necessary.”

A new phone system is also being installed with caller identification and the ability to generate phone logs. Other improvements include the replacement of concrete outside the oldest part of the building and resurfacing the tennis courts at Hancock Field, which are owned by the school.
