July is not just for fireworks. It is also the national month for blueberries, hot dogs, ice cream, and baked beans. Did you know that Michigan leads the nation in the production of certain dry beans, including navy beans and black beans? Happy picnicking.

The Omena Historical Society's "Walk Down Memory Lane" - which was actually a bus tour this year – was a great success with two busloads and over 50 people.

The Ehrhardt beach is full. Mike Mustaine has arrived from Ovieda, Fla., to join his wife, Libby, and their children, Kate and Sam. Peggy and Jon Elscott and their daughter, Claire, are in town from Kansas City, Kan. Bob and Marty Ehrhardt from Baltimore have been enjoying their stay in Omena with their children, twins Ida and Ava, and Nate. The kids on the beach look forward to Bob’s bonfires.

Ron Dotzauer from Snohomish, Wash., came to Omena from British Columbia, where he won first place in the king salmon category at the Rivers Inlet Sportsmen’s Lodge Fishing Derby with a 34¼-pound salmon.

Phoebe Travis and Clara Powell had fun playing together at Omena Beach.

Nancy Cooper was a volunteer at the Leelanau Conservancy booth at the Art Show in Leland last weekend. Andy and Pattie Jamison from Cincinnati are guests of Nancy and her husband Randy this week. Amy Fischer, who has been in Omena for a while with her mother, Jeanne Hines, was joined this past weekend by her husband John and their sons John and Alex from Cincinnati.

Jim and Barb Wickemeyer from Cincinnati were here for a week with their children, Chadd, Matt, and Kate. Jim and Janet Wickemeyer from Battle Creek joined them with their children, Emily and Michael, and Michael’s friend, Jake Fletcher.

Happy birthday to Clay Coste and John Varley. Happy anniversary to Bill and Judy Knorp, and Jim and Nancy Gregory.
