At the age of 50, the Janice Sue has never looked better. In fact, she’s fit for a birthday party in our home, Fishtown in Leland.
The Fishtown Preservation Society is planning a grand celebration Sunday for the unveiling of the Janice Sue, a fish tug that has been renovated for the unveiling.
The preservation society, a non-profit corporation that has purchased much of Fishtown and plans to retain its commercial fishing heritage, is planning a day-long party beginning with a 4-hour art show at 11 a.m. at the Old Art Building. Featured will be photographs and paintings of the Janice Sue through the years. Included will be new pen-and-ink drawings by Keith Burnham.
A “rubber duck” race over the Leland Dam will begin at noon, inspired by a few mother ducks who earlier this season shock onlookers by training their ducklings to “shoot the rapids.” “Racing” ducks are being sold for $6 at The Crib, Main Street Gallery, Tug Stuff and through the preservation society.
The Janice Sue will be re-dedicated at 1 p.m., with may members of the Steffens and Sallman fishing families, her original owners, in attendance.
The fun moves to the Old Art Building at 1:30 p.m. with a “cornhole toss.” Attendees can pitch bags of dried corn or beans into a “porthole” on a raised platform. Two-man teams may register for $30, and are guaranteed to receive t-shirts. Prizes and a trophy are up for grabs.
Two hours of music by Blind Dog Hank will also begin at 1:30 p.m.
