Zachman resigns from S-B school board

Applicants are being sought for appointment to the Suttons Bay Board of Education in the wake of a resignation.

John Zachman, in the final 18 months of a four-year term, submitted his resignation effective Tuesday.

Zachman, a professor of political science at Northwestern Michigan College, told board members the demands of having a career, family and serving on the board were getting to him.

“I felt like I was not going to be doing something well if I continued,” he said.

Zachman earned his bachelor’s degree and teacher certification from Michigan State University and a Ph.D. in political science from Duke University. In addition to his courses at NMC, Zachman’s work experience includes two years as a teacher of English, history and Spanish at a secondary school in Indianola, Miss.

He served on the board’s curriculum committee, and as chairman of the personnel and athletics committee.

Board policy states that an appointment to fill the vacancy will be made within 30 days of the resignation. Letters of interest will be accepted at Box 367, Suttons Bay, through Feb. 21; interviews are expected to be integrated into the board’s Feb. 27 meeting.

Zachman’s term is scheduled to expire June 30, 2013. Zachman’s replacement will be appointed through the end of the 2012 calendar year and the remainder of his term will be filled by election in November.
