Talking with Mandy Jelinek
Town or township of residence: Suttons Bay Township.
Resident of county since: Pretty much my whole life. We moved away for a couple of years, but came back.
Age and birthplace: 27 at Munson Hospital.
Occupation: Baker at Chimoski’s Bakery in Suttons Bay. I also run Jelinek Honey.
Marital status: Married to Jeremy and we have two kids, Wyatt, 4, and Cayden, 2½.
You live in Leelanau County because: We are both from here, it’s where we make our living and it’s a great place to raise children.
Last good movie you saw: One for the Money. It’s based on a Stephanie Plum book about a female bounty hunter.
MANDY JELINEK is a baker with Chimoski Bakery and runs Jelinek Honey. Last good book you read: To the Nines by Stephanie Plum. She has a whole series of books, 18, with a female bounty hunter as the main character.
If you could trade places with one person for a day, who would that be: My great grandmother. She was born in 1898 and she saw everything from the first automobiles to the world wars and everything we’ve accomplished over the last 100 years or so. That would be cool.
Things important to you that you have accomplished so far: My family, obviously. Getting Jelinek Honey up and running.
What you hope to be doing in 10 years: I hope to own the bakery and continue making Jelinek Honey successful. If I get to own the bakery, I’d like to set up a small bee keeping supply area in the store as well.
Things you lose sleep over: Debt and using BATA busses for transporting kids to Suttons Bay school.
If you could change one thing in Leelanau County, it would be: I want those houses on Scott Hill Road torn down. They’re ugly.
Favorite dessert: Chocolate nut pie. My mom makes it.
Are you a coffee drinker: Yes, but I like iced coffee the best, or specialty, flavored coffees like mochas. We just serve plain coffee here. Pedalin’ Beans makes great coffee, but they’re kind of out of my way.
Favorite place in Leelanau County: Peterson Park. It’s where I go when I want to get away from everything. I just go there and sit and recharge the batteries. Growing up every Mothers Day we would go there as family, it is my mom’s favorite place, too.
If you have more time, you would: I would travel more. I would love to go to New Zealand. My sister just got back and I’m so jealous.
The words that best describe you are: Very fun loving, a great mommy with No. 3 on the way, generous with my time and hard working.
