FRANCES WALING

Died May 5, 2012

Maple City - Frances Waling passed away on May 5, 2012, at the age of 92, after a brief illness.

She was born in Parsons, Kansas on July 15, 1919 the daughter of a minister, Rev. William J. and Kitty (McVay) Whaley. Her family moved around the country, living in Colorado and California. They finally settled in Bloomington, Indiana, where she attended high school and studied at Indiana University.

It was there that she met her future husband, Buford Waling, a Chemistry major. Frances graduated with a B.A. in Home Economics in 1940 and found her first job teaching in Corydon, Indiana.

Frances married Buford Waling in 1941 and they moved to Midland, Michigan, where Buford was employed at the Dow Chemical Company. For the next 36 years Frances lived in Midland, raised a family with three children, and was active in the community. Her energies were focused at the United Methodist Church, where she regularly taught Bible studies and participated in church activities.

Music was a great love in her life and she played first violin in the Midland Symphony Orchestra for 20 years. Her greatest achievement was the energy and love she gave to her family and friends.

A passion of Frances and her family was relaxing in Leelanau, County at their property on Lime Lake. This is where she hosted frequent family reunions in the summer, as well as guests. Frances spent her final years at Lime Lake with Buford in their house in the woods and near the water.

Frances is survived by her beloved husband of 70 years, Buford. She is also survived by three children, Jan, of Lime Lake, Paul (Janine), of Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and Diane Kemp (Marc), of Lime Lake. Frances is also survived by grandchildren: Stacy, Erik, Maria, Tomas, Travis, Andrew, and Jason, as well as greatgrandchildren Benjamin and Hunter.

Visitation with the family will be at the Leland Community United Methodist Church of Leland, Michigan at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 9th. A service will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the church, followed by a light lunch. Interment will take place at the Cleveland Township Cemetery.
