DORIS F. MAYHEW

Doris Frances Mayhew, 93, of Suttons Bay, formerly of Ortonville, passed away on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at Northport Highlands. Doris was born on Nov. 20, 1918 in Detroit to the late James and Laura (Ehrenburger) Sweet. Beloved wife of the late Vern Mayhew for 71 years (childhood sweethearts at Denby High); loving mother of Loren Mayhew, Jan (Tammy) Mayhew, Frances (Dave) Burcar; sister of the late Catherine (Alvin) Peterson; nephews, James (Becky), John, and Brian Peterson; also survived by 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, numerous cousins, a great niece and nephews, and friends who will never be forgotten by the family. During her professional career, Doris was a bookkeeper for many years. Later, she became a technical copywriter. Upon retiring to Suttons Bay, she continued her writing skills for the Leelanau Historical Society, Power Squadron, and other advertising projects. Doris was a devoted homemaker who loved her family. She served as a Cub Scout den leader and Garden Club member. She enjoyed great books, table games, ping pong, and horseback riding. During their retirement years, Doris and Vern enjoyed boating and skiing with family and friends. A gathering of friends and family for both Doris and Vern will be held on Monday, June 11 at 9 a.m. until the start of the 10 a.m. memorial service at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Traverse City. The Rev. Stanley Price will officiate.
