Elmwood Township trash pick-up needs an overhaul

To the Editor:

My recent trash hauling bill and a notice in the Elmwood Township newsletter have caused me to think about changes to our present operation as it pertains to the two primary haulers operating in Leelanau County. Over the last few years the “fuel/environmental charge” has increased from several dollars to almost $20.

Elmwood Township is seeking input on a preferred trash hauler concept for the entire township. Presently the two major haulers pick up trash on my street each week. This would seem to be a waste of fuel, added expense, and additional wear on our county roads.

Township bidding of the services is one solution. Another solution would be for the haulers to trade equal numbers of customers to reduce duplicate routes.

A third solution would be for the haulers reduce their routes by picking up all of the trash on a given route including the trash of an equivalent number of their competitors customer’s trash.
