Rev. Marshall R. Collins
1930-2012 Services were held Tuesday for the Rev. Marshall R. Collins of Northport who died Wed., July 18 at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
He was 82.
Collins was born June 12, 1930 in Preston, Md., the son of Gilbert and Sarah (Jones) Collins. On Sept. 16, 1967 in Nevada he married Mary W. Thompson, who survives.
As a young man, Collins served in the U.S. Air Force. Collins was an inspirational minister throughout his 60 years in the ministry and was a true man of God advocating for youth and underserved communities.
In 1990 he accepted the pastoral job of the Northport Indian Mission Church which he served until his retirement in 2000. His ministry continued through his anointed revivals and camp meetings, which he continued until his death.
Collins had a love for rock collecting and was the owner of Nature Gems Rock Shop in Northport.
In addition to his wife, Mary, he is survived by his children, Charmaine (Randy) Geeter, daughter of Elmira Reairs, Rose Whittaker, Herbert (Shari) Whittaker, Hurbert (Kim) Whittaker, Daron Whittaker, Yolanda (Richard) Collins Hagley, Crystal (Brandon) Collins Wilson and Marshall Jr. (Tricia) Collins, 45 grandchildren and a multitude of great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Felicia Whittaker.
Burial took place at Leelanau Township Cemetery in Northport.
