County's two left turns
Only twice has Leelanau County supported a Democratic presidential candidate in the General election, and both votes occurred in relatively recent history. Here’s what the Leelanau Enterprise reported:
1964
“For the first time in its 101 year history Leelanau went Democratic in its presidential vote and followed the national tend in choosing Lyndon Johnson over Senator Barry Goldwater.”
2008
“Barack Obama surprised many of his own advocates by easily breezing to the U.S. presidency with 52 percent of the vote (to become) the first Democrat to be supported by Leelanau County voters since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964.”
