Permits issue low, value up

The number of building permits issued in Leelanau County continues to drag. However, the value of permits issued continues to rebound after a four-year construction drought.

Nineteen additional building permits were issued by the county Construction Code Authority in the past two weeks bringing the year-to-date total to 171. The estimated value of the permits was $1,045,130 for an average value per project of just over $55,000. The total value of permits issued through the first two-thirds of 2012 is $15,312,331, up by more than $3 million from last year and $4 million from this time two years ago.

Five years ago at this time, before the economic downturn, the number of permits issued was 199 and the total value of projects underway was $22,570,478.

The following permits were issued by the county Construction Code Authority, as listed by the community in which work is being done:

VILLAGE OF EMPIRE— Clyde/ McKenzie Ellis Trust (Quartersawn Custom Carpentry) residential deck landing and stair at 11732 S. Storm Hill Dr. ($450)

VILLAGE OF NORTHPORT— Judy Rantz residential wood frame deck at 205 E. Third St. ($2,160)

VILLAGE OF SUTTONS BAY — Thomas P. and Barbara Witkowski (Gerard Belanger Licensed Builder)— alteration to roof at 508 N. St. Mary’s St. ($10,000;) Tracy Smith and Erin Crowder, residential woodframe deck at 409 N. St. Joseph St. $5,700).
