Fireworks noise needs to end in Leelanau, too

To the Editor:

Traverse City is considering a ban of fireworks in the city except for a threeday bubble around national holidays. They report that numerous complaints have been received about late-night fireworks throughout the summer.

Based on my experience and that of others in my area, I believe a similar ban in Leelanau County would be appropriate and greatly appreciated. While I do not doubt the patriotism of many folks, beginning to express it in late June for four or five weeks constitutes an abuse to the public.

Inasmuch as state law now permits the use of more powerful rockets, roman candles and aerials, the increased volatility of these devices can adversely affect the well being of our seniors, young children and even our animals.

Being forced indoors to escape the explosive noise is ineffective even with closed windows. It is only fair that noise ordinances be established and enforced for the common good of all and I hope this matter will receive some serious attention.
