Leelanau County produced four of seven “best of class” winners at the 2011 Michigan Wine & Spirits Competition.

Chateau Fontaine of Lake Leelanau was the best of the dry white wines with its 2010 Dry White Riesling. Black Star Farms, south of Suttons Bay, was tops in the dessert wine category with its 2008 A Capella Ice Wine.

In the “sparkling” category, L. Mawby’s entry was judged the “best” for its Cremant Classic. And Forty-Five North Vineyard & Winery was tops in the Rose category for its 2010 Rose of Cabernet Franc.

Gill’s Pier Vineyard & Winery, Northport. Silver — 2010 Riesling; Bronze — 2008 Merlot and Just Unleashed (bronze).

Good Harbor Vineyards, Lake Leelanau. Silver — Cherry, Moonstruck, Sleeping Bare and Trillium; Bronze — 2008 Tribute Chardonnay, Fishtown White and Harbor Red.
