Horse jumpers competing here
A series of horse jumping competitions based in Leelanau County is celebrating its 10th anniversary this summer.
“Ten summers ago, there were four women who began the shows to promote jumping,” said Jana Reincke of Suttons Bay. “The first year were had 12 riders … now we have 40 who come from as far north as Sault Ste. Marie, Canada and from Cadillac to the south.”
There are eight Stepping Stone Horse Shows this year. The next one will be held at Gem Stone Farm on S. Center Hwy. at 9 a.m. Saturday. Future show dates are Sept. 1 at Blue Oxer Farm at Co. Rd. 616 and 669 west of Maple City and Sept. 22 at Northern Pines in Maple City.
Competitors are awarded points and medals at each individual meet and a season-ending tally will be awarded at the “medal finals,” scheduled this year on Oct. 6 at Double Oak Farm near Suttons Bay.
There is no admission charged to spectators and all are welcome, Reinke said.
