Things seem to be a little quieter as families leave to go back to school, but there’s still plenty of activity in the area. After a brief cool spell, this past week has been beautiful – dry and breezy, mostly sunny and in the 70’s.

The Leelanau Farmers Markets are going strong. Produce seems to be at peak right now. Tomatoes have just been around for about two weeks. The drought has reduced the amount of corn available, but there was plenty to be found last weekend. Omena shoppers were seen this past week at Northport on Friday, Suttons Bay on Saturday, and Lake Leelanau on Sunday. Some may have even found their way to Leland on Thursday, Glen Arbor on Tuesday, or Empire on Saturday.

The Sousa Concert played to a great crowd, as always. Congratulations on a wonderful performance to the Northport Community Band and a few guest musicians who joined them. Omena residents who played in the band were Joan Kalchik TenBrock, Joan Post Brown, Drew Ehrhardt, and Ron Sutton.

Tom and Helen Reed Maher have an empty cottage now after a busy middle of August. Helen’s daughter Laurie Remter was here from Marietta, Georgia with her sons Clark and Greg, who is from Asheville, N.C., where he is a chef. Helen’s nephew Bill Reed came from Massachusetts for a visit, and her nephew Rob Reed was here from Maryland with his wife Kate and their children, Adam and Lillian.

John and Peggy Fisher are here for two weeks from Augusta, Ga. They have enjoyed visits from their children and grandchildren, most of whom are also from Augusta.

Bill Renz is back up from Cincinnati to spend a little time with Rat at Martom House on Omena Heights. Their niece Marjie Smith is here from Denver staying at the Renz/Smith cottage with her sons Declan and Avery. She overlapped for a few days with her brother Preston and his two daughters from Portland, Oregon.

Saturday was a perfect day for the outdoor wedding of Emily Steinhilber and Dylan Hawkins. Emily’s parents are Bob Steinhilber and Mary Jo O’Connor, of Omena and Virginia Beach. The wedding and reception were held in their yard on Putnam Road. Chava Bahle presided over the ceremony. The groom is from Lexington, Va., and his parents are Frank Hawkins and Natalie Shulkin. Guests at the wedding enjoyed bocci ball, and some “serious” dancing to the music of the Detroit band Vinyl Underground.

Emily just graduated from law school at Vermont Law, and she and Dylan will be residing in Virginia Beach.

It’s hard to believe, but last week’s column contained a grievous error. Gail Koch was in the Northport Dog Parade with Joan Kalchik TenBrock and Jack Russell terriers, Ruby and Reggie — as she is every year. Somehow, the column reported that it was Gail Lang who was in the parade.

The Alice Busby Walk in Northport will not be held this year.

Happy Birthday to Nancy Groesser and Diane Joyce.
