Fifteen-year-old Lauren Baker dragged what was later identified as a lake sturgeon up on the beach found while swimming at Van’s Beach. Department of Natural Resources fish biologist Tom Rozich suspects that the same botulism organism that is killing seagulls likely took down the sturgeon.

Leelanau County Sheriff’s Deputy Bruce Beeker – who was fired by the sheriff more than a year ago – is expected to report for duty at the county Law Enforcement Center in Suttons Bay Township on Monday. The third psychological evaluation shows he’s fit for duty.

The Tour de Leelanau is one of 13 events in 2007 that are part of the 2007 USA Cycling Pro Tour. The Tour de Leelanau is also sanctioned by the International Cycling Union and this year’s race is expected to attract more than 260 men’s and women’s racers. The men’s race is 109.5 miles and starts in Leland. The women’s race is 69.5 miles and will start at The Homestead.

A four-year effort to dramatically increase tart cherry consumption has been terminated by the Suttons Bay Rotary Club. The “Cherry Initiative” ultimate goal was to keep farmers farming and subsequently preserve farmland. A “silent” commercial partner has dropped out of the project.

A proposal to swap Crystal River bottomland owned by The Homestead for ridge side land owned by the National Park Service has gained support from a local unit of government. The action taken by the Glen Arbor Township Board comes on the eve of a fourth public hearing on a proposed new General Management Plan for 41,000 acre Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

The Village of Suttons Bay is between a rock and a hard place with its sewer system. Village residents this week were being asked to limit the number of times they flush their toilets in hopes that sewage treatment lagoons won’t overflow.

Ottawa and Chippewa Indians from Michigan and Canada and representatives of tribes from other states are gathering this week at Peshawbestown for the annual Pow Wow Saturday and Sunday in the Leelanau County community.

The Northport Board of Education Tuesday night accepted low bids for a $585,000 building bond issue and 20,000 gallons of fuel oil, but rejected a suggestion that the Northport and Leland Boards “actively pursue” a study of possible consolidation.

Leelanau County’s four K-12 school systems are expected to enroll a total of more than 2,200 students when classes begin after Labor Day.

Rainfall for August totaled 3.11 inches by midday yesterday at the County Road Commission garage at Suttons Bay, compared with a norm for the entire month of 2.68 inches.

Traffic was snarled up for several hours Sunday morning in the Glen Lake area by vandals who, the night before, had re-distributed route and directional signs, routing motorists in circles. It took Deputy Early Leymon nearly four hours to unscramble the mess. Observers said nearly 100 cars were involved.

Miss Ruth Belanger of Lake Leelanau, national cherry queen, is scheduled for a round of radio, television, and newspaper interviews for the next three days in New York City. Yesterday, in Washington, D.C., Queen Ruth delivered a cherry pie to the White House to be taken to President Truman by his appointment secretary, Matthew Connelly.

A dozen Glen Lake property owners, meeting Friday night at the home of Harry Weese near the Narrows, formed the nucleus of an organization intended to make sure that Glen Lake is kept at the level prescribed by court order. Property owners from various areas around the lake had all suffered damage from high water.

J.G. Holliday will give an entertainment in the Town Hall, in this village on Saturday evening the 26th, with the wonderful Cineograph or moving picture machine with Stereopticon combined. Shows pictures that move as in life, just as seen in all the principle city of the country for some months.
