Ballot language approved for Northport Village election
The Northport Village Council last week approved the wording for the November ballot question regarding the possible appointment of the clerk.
The wording, approved by 6-1 vote with president Fred Steffens voting against it, says “Shall Village of Northport Ordinance 101 — providing for the appointment of the Village Clerk upon nomination by the Village President and appointment by a majority vote of the Village Council (per MCL 62.1(4) — be approved?”
The ballot question was approved last Thursday during the Village Council’s regular meeting.
Steffens said he voted against the wording because he thought clerk and treasurer would be “appointed” by the president with Council approval. Steffens said would apologize if he was wrong and called the Enterprise the next morning to say he was.
A similar ballot question for the possible appointment of the treasurer was also prepared by clerk Joni L. Scott.
The November question was a result of a petition drive, spearheaded by trustee Donna Groomes who believes voters should decide their elected officials and not five people.
Groomes’ reference to “five” was a 5-2 vote by the Council on June 21 call- ing for a new village ordinance to appoint both the clerk and treasurer. She and Steffens voted against the ordinance.
