Margaret Alice Hohnke 1927-2012

Services were held Wednesday, Aug. 22 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for Margaret Alice Hohnke who died Saturday, Aug. 18 at the family farm in Good Harbor.

She was 85.

Margaret was born April 29, 1927 in Cincinnati, the daughter of Elmer and Alice Schnehain. On Oct. 21, 1950 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Good Harbor, she married Benjamin Franklin Hohnke, who survives.

Margaret loved reading, especially mystery novels. She was an avid walker and enjoyed feeding and watching her backyard birds, squirrels, raccoons, deer and chipmunks. She was the best friend a dog could have.

Margaret was always willing to help a neighbor when needed. She was a hard worker, serving as a cook, cottage caretaker, and laundress in Leland; a secretary and bookkeeper for Hohnke Construction and the family fruit farm.

A devoted wife and mother, Margaret was deeply religious and had an abiding faith in Christ.

She was preceded in death by her son, Gordon. In addition to her husband, Margaret is survived by four sons; Elmer (Christine) of Leland, George of Brunswick, Ga., Alan (Sue) of Kingsley and Douglas (Eva Brown) of Traverse City. She is also survived by her brother, John, of Cincinnati and four loving grandchildren.

Burial was at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery.
