St. Mary School plans 125 year celebration
THE LEELANAU Children’s Choir and Leelanau Youth Ensemble is celebrating 20 years of joyful singing. Members past and present will join in concert this year to sing some their best-loved songs from the past two decades. Choir director Margaret Bell is now holding auditions. Interested families can reach her at 883- SING. The upcoming school year will mark St. Mary School’s 125th year of providing Catholic education on the Leelanau Peninsula.
The school will host three days of events for its Anniversary Kick-Off Weekend Celebration.
On Friday, Sept. 7, at 9 a.m., Bishop Bernard Hebda will concelebrate the first school Mass of the year with the Rev. Michael Janowski.
Immediately following Mass, the bishop will rededicate the school to St. Mary, the school’s patron saint. A light reception will take place in the school lobby after the ceremony.
There will be a dinner and basketball event on Saturday, Sept. 9. The Leelanau Council of the Knights of Columbus will host a spaghetti dinner from 4 - 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria. A free will offering will be accepted.
Alumni will be reunited for a basketball game night. The woman’s alumni team will take the court at 6:30 p.m. The men’s game will following at 7:30 p.m. There is no entry fee and all are welcome to watch. According to school historians St. Mary was started in 1887 by the Rev. Bauer. Mother Benedicta from Chicago sent her “three most able nuns” to staff the school.
