Leelanau tennis team second at GTA tourney

The Leelanau co-op, co-ed tennis team finished third in the Grand Traverse Academy Invitational.

The squad, coached by Tim Sutherland, finished with 27 points one back of Midland Dow and Traverse City West.

The team had three flight champs in Parker Kokowicz, Leif Mohrman and Joel Sneed at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 single, respectively.

Freshman Kyle Hayes at No. 4 singles, was second as was the No. 1 doubles team of Ross Guilbeau and Jamie McFarlane.

“It was in the 90s and a tough day for tennis,” Sutherland said. “But I’m happy with the singles group so far.

“It will be our strength.”

The Leelanau team, sponsored by Glen Lake but with players from St. Mary and Leland, swept the Traverse City St. Francis junior varsity team, 8-0 on Aug. 22.

Guilbeau and Hayes, who served up an ace on match point, won a thriller, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

Kokowicz won 6-1, 6-1, Mohrman prevailed 6-0, 6-0, and Sneed won 6-0, 6-2. Macfarlane won at No. 4 singles by default.

The squad hosted Traverse City Central yesterday and will host Charlevoix next Wednesday, Sept. 5.

“I’m waiting for players to step up in doubles,” said Sutherland, noting the doubles teams are young and inexperienced.

Sutherland is playing several combinations, including Maddie Fink, Lindsey Boone, Braden Reed, Jake Duperon, Echo Schaefer, Evan Fink, Amanda Lodge, Lexi Galla, Becca Brown and Siaira Milroy.
