WALTER BORKOVICH of Elmwood Township is up to bat and on the big screen at Comerica park during the Division 1 All-Star prep baseball game on July 1. Walter Borkovich’s high school career ended July 1 at Comerica Park in Detroit.

It ended better than the 17-year-old Elmwood Township pitcher could imagine. He faced four batters in the ninth inning of the Division 1 East West All- Star Game, retiring the final three in order.

“It was an awesome experience,” said Borkovich, who earned his All-Star stripes by pitching Traverse City West to the Big North Conference championship and the Division 1 district title.

Borkovich also played third base for three innings and grounded out in his only plate appearance in the sixth inning.

“I can’t believe I played third base where Miguel Cabrera plays, then got to go on the mound where Justin Verlander pitches.” Borkovich said. “It was the coolest thing.”

Borkovich, who was 7-2 on the mound this year for the Titans, is Michigan State bound. This weekend, he’s playing ball for the Grand Rapids Diamonds U-18 team at Central Michigan.

“I wasn’t really thinking about the All-Star game as my last prep game,” Borkovich said. “I was just happy to be there.

“There was no pressure.”

The 6-foot-5 right-hander earned second team All-State honors in Division 1 from the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association.
