Omena’s Cherry Basket Farm receives state honor
The Michigan Barn Preservation Network (MBPN) has named the Cherry Basket Farm in Omena as one of six Barns of the Year.
The honor was announced at the MBPN’s annual conference on March 7-8 at the Kellogg Center during Michigan State Universities annual Agriculture and Natural Resources Week activities.
The Cherry Basket Farm, owned by Tom and Marsha Buehler, was chosen Barn of the Year in the Commercial Agricultural or Adaptive Use. Cottonwood Barn of Dexter was also chosen in that division.
The network has been selecting the Barn of the Year for 17 years. This year’s half dozen selections brings the total number of winners through the year to 55.
The award recognizes Michigan barns for their unique qualities and/or preservation efforts.
Nominated barns must have been built before 1957 and be in-use for one of four purposes. Barns must retain their overall appearance — both interior and exterior barn characteristics.
