Lexi Schaub led the way in eighth place (23:46) in front of Grace McKillip (10th - 23:51), Emily Burgess (11th - 23:52) and Mary MacDonald (21st - 25:26).

On the boys side, two Eagles medaled as St. Mary came away in sixth place as a team.

Tristin Tarsa (10th - 19:03) turned in a strong performance, medaling for the fifth time in as many events this season.

Avery Kohler (22nd - 20:16) also medaled.

“It was an excellent performance from the team,” said first-year coach Nick Papes. “They definitely had a lot of fun. We just came off the two toughest courses that we’ll run all season. There’s a lot of hidden inclines and sandy terrain. The times are inflated.”

The Eagles return to action for Pine River’s Cecil Burch Invitational on Saturday.

“We’ve had success there the past,” Papes said. “The results and times will be a bit closer to what we saw at Benzie.”

He said things are starting to fall into place for his team now that school is under way and schedules are aligned.

The Eagles host the St. Mary Lake Leelanau Invitational at Veronica Valley park on Oct. 10.
