Sign up for beach cleanup

After a long, busy summer, area beaches need some tender loving care.

A beach clean-up will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18, at Van’s Beach in Leland.

Anyone who can walk the beach is asked to help with the project, which starts in Leland. Forms will be available for those who would like to adopt other beaches.

The local effort is part of a series of clean-ups taking place on the same weekend across the Great Lakes. The Alliance for the Great Lakes organizes beach cleanups and catalogs Great Lakes trash data.

Data from the clean-up is archived online to identify trends and deter illegal dumping.

The clean-up is part of a citizen science project that has been going on for 25 years.

Volunteers should bring gloves, a bucket or trash bags and should dress for the weather.

Those who are interested can sign up online at the Great Lakes Adopt website or call or text Och at 409-2889. Volunteers can also call Och for details or to adopt other beaches.

The event is sponsored by the Leelanau Democratic Party and the Alliance for the Great Lakes.
