Leelanau lacks access to high speed Internet

To the Editor:

As a person who is in the business of helping folks with their computer and internet problems, I see first hand the lack of high speed broadband service here in Leelanau County and the problems it causes in our ever more connected society.

I repeatedly receive calls asking about the choices for Internet access from people planning on moving to the area or those with no service or very slow, unreliable access, and their options are extremely limited. The Leelanau Peninsula Economic Foundation in association with Connect Michigan is trying to help provide high-speed access throughout the county. The first step in this process is a survey that will document what businesses and residents are using for Internet access. Please take the time to fill out the survey online at connectmycommunity.org/leelanau-peninsula/ or pick up a hard copy at any local library and help us make the case for a connected Leelanau. Time is running out to complete the survey so please fill it out as soon as you can.

The importance of high-speed, reliable Internet going forward as we plant our feet firmly in the 21st century cannot be overstated. We need the help of every business owner and resident — both seasonal and year-around — no matter what type of Internet access you have to help make this project a success.
