Talk of the County

Having a conversation with Marilyn Zimmerman

MARILYN ZIMMERMAN, a retired attorney from Lapeer, would like to see the world through the eyes of Pope Francis for a day. MARILYN ZIMMERMAN, a retired attorney from Lapeer, would like to see the world through the eyes of Pope Francis for a day. Name: Marilyn Zimmerman

Town or township of residence: Leelanau Township.

Resident of county since: January of 2002. The scenery and the beauty brought us. We retired up here.

Age and birthplace: I’m 64, and I was born in East Lansing. My dad attended what was then Michigan State College.

Occupation: I’m an attorney, retired, from Lapeer County.

Marital status: Married to David, and he is a retired HR director from General Motors. We have three children and five grandchildren.

You live in Leelanau County because: The scenery and the people. I am continually impressed by the educational backgrounds, the insights, and the generosity of the people. So many people do so many good things, and they are often unrecognized.

Last good movie you saw: “Spotlight.” That’s the story of the Boston Globe’s investigation of pedophilia within the Catholic Church.

Last good book you read: “LaRose,” by Louise Erdrich. It’s a fictional story of two families, the father in one family accidentally shoots the young son of the other family. The shooter and his wife send their 5-year-old son to live with the family that lost it’s son. It follows the story of the boy as he grows up and how the families handle this sensitive situation.

If you could trade places with one person for a day, who would that be: It would probably be Pope Francis, even though I’m Episcopalian. I think he’s a fascinating guy, and I’d like to see the world through his eyes.

Things important to you that you have accomplished so far: Having a career that I aspired to and enjoyed, a happy marriage, and my family.

What you hope to be doing in 10 years: More of the same. I would like to travel to a few more exotic places that I have not been. Iceland, New Zealand, India, China.

Things you lose sleep over: Gun violence and the upcoming election.

If you could change one thing in Leelanau County, it would be: I would like to see more affordable housing for the workers, and I think it would benefit the businesses and the people who visit here as well.

Favorite dessert: My own apple pie, with Kilcherman’s apples, preferably with Duchess of Oldenburg. That’s Mrs. Kilcherman’s suggestion.

Are you a coffee drinker: No coffee. I’m a tea drinker. I probably have 2-3 cups of black tea, and then maybe a cup or two of green tea.

Favorite place in Leelanau County: The beach at Christmas Cove.

If you have more time, you would: I would volunteer more. I volunteer at St. Christopher’s, but I would do more with Leelanau Christian Neighbors if I had more time.

The words that best describe you are: Hardworking, sincere, and I would also say inquisitive.
